Q: What do you do here at RAWSO? What is a typical day like for you?
A: My official title is Lead Surveyor. I lay out everything for everybody on each job. I start every single job before the first piece of equipment ever touches the ground. Whether that’s getting materials ready for utility installations, or making sure dozers and loaders are where they need to be, anything that the job site requires as far as layout goes, that’s on me. I also do the topography of the sites as well.
Q: What were you up to in your career before joining RAWSO?
A: I joined RAWSO in May 2019. Before that, I worked at another construction company for almost nine years. I did a little bit of everything there. I started out surveying, but I handled plenty of other responsibilities too. If they needed me to run a dump truck or something like that, I would do that in addition to surveying.
Eventually, I got moved up to an operator’s position, and then I was a lead man for one of their foremen before I came to RAWSO. Basically my entire career has been in construction. I graduated high school in 2009, and I’ve been in the construction industry since 2010.
Q: What do you like about your current job?
A: The main reason why anybody gets up out of their bed in the morning is to provide for their families. I’ve got a wife and two little kids. We’re currently looking to buy our second house, so my ability to provide for them is something I certainly enjoy. There are many other things I like about my job though. Just the fact that I can be outside while I work is always great.
Q: How is RAWSO a different environment compared to your previous employer?
A: I honestly loved the nine years I spent there, but looking back, I would say that I only had between 30 and 40 weekends off in those nine years. They were a 58-hour per week company. Every weekend, I would go to work early Saturday morning, and I would get back home around three or four o’clock.
I never had much family time, other than on Sundays, and that was the only day I had to work around the house or do any tasks for my wife. It took a toll. My wife got accustomed to me being at work before she even woke up on Saturdays.
We had our son in 2012, and I hated leaving my wife alone to care for him every Saturday. Our little girl was born in 2018, and ever since I started here, it’s made a world of difference. Now that I work at RAWSO, my wife is always telling me that I need to get out of the house more on weekends!
Q: How do you like to spend your free time, now that you have so much more of it?
A: I like to go fishing with my brother and my dad. I’m hoping to get my son out there this year to go fishing with us. I’ll also take the wife and kids over to my parents’ house, or hang out with my in-laws. We’ll take the kids to the playground, go to birthday parties, all that good stuff. I never had the opportunity to do any of that, so now that I do, I take full advantage of every chance I get.
